This coffee smelled burnt and bitter straight out of the back. Beans were extremly dark and were so large that they clogged my grinder. Would not buy again.
It was too dark and harsh for me.
Smooth, robust, very flavorful!
As cold brew is it really nice the smoky is smooth and the earthy-ness is nice.
This is a GREAT summer cold brew
Wow! That is some STRONG coffee
I typically enjoy Major Dickanson's by Pete's- and this is WAY too bitter and dark. No flavor really over the ashy taste.
Brew method: drip machine
Pros: very dark, smooth, complex, without being too smoky
Cons: don't have any, excellent cup
This was very bitter and we did not enjoy it.
Loved it! This is a coffee for those who enjoy dark, flavorful roasts. Some other reviews mention it tasting too smoky or burnt, but I want my husband thought it was smooth, bold, and something a little different from the usual.
Could not use in our grinder, was never able to get the right grind for a decent pour. Had to throw this back out, sadly
I love this coffee. It's absolutely amazing!
This was actually not our fave.. It was SO dark and oily that it grinded very clumpy, which made it difficult to get an even extraction, and mucked up the grinder a bit.
Too strong, burnt flavor.
this almost tasted burnt.I had to throw it out!
Great dark blend. We enjoyed it very much.
It turned the coffee almost black. It was not great while filtering.
For such a dark roast with dark beans (almost black) this is so good. Sweet. Smooth. Low acid. Yum.
Medium flavor an excellent companion with a sweet pastry
Way too dark for me. Mostly tastes burnt.
We do not want ground coffee. This is ground coffee
Definitely a favorite. I love dark roasted coffee.
a little too dark
I thought this was extremely smoky-too much fro my tastes. Really didn’t enjoy.
Burned. Massively over-roasted. No flavor other than burnt. Very disappointing.
Much too dark and oily and tends to clog up my grinder.
Too dark for me but if you love extra dark I'm sure it's wonderful
Insanely dark and oily. Sticks to everything. Tastes burnt. Can’t get the grinder fine enough for this. Still comes out crazy fast.
Great, nice dark full body richness
Great coffee . It’s bold , it’s dark . Has a lot of flavor . My favorite one . Please send more coffee that tastes like this .
Definitely a favorite
Strong dark roast coffee with very flat taste with absolutely no undertones. After 2 cups made I threw it out. It had that stale taste.
I love this one. I've reordered a couple times. Delicious!
Oily and too dark
I really liked this one. Bold, good body and well complemented by my creamer.
Loved the flavor
Very dark, but I really liked it
pretty good i like oily dark roasts (maybe not this oily)
Love this one ! Rich and smooth
This is the best coffee I received so far.
Call Amnesty International! Alert the UN-the Geneva Convention has been seriously violated here! This coffee was tortured and burned beyond recognition. The minute you open the bag, you can smell the char. The roasting of this bean is a crime against espresso and humanity. Undrinkable? Yes. Oily beans where every ounce of flavor (except smoke) has been extracted from the food. The beans were given a humane and gentle interment in my compost pile after giving up their lives for....nothing. And I LIKE dark, french roast beans but the line between exquisite flavor and giving up the troop locations under torture is fine, and this bean crossed it. RIP Dark Sumatra.
The best yet.
I was really excited for this one because the beans were so dark, but it lacked flavor. It worked in the caffeine department though!
Fantastic dark,rich flavorful brew!
Best one yet!,
Could be my new regular order
Coffee was burnt
Was too dark. This coffee was like drinking ash.
DEcent cup of coffee
Too oily, Could not get pressure right
Burnt and too smoky, oily. Not a bad coffee but for its price yes.
Very smooth for a bold coffee!
The beans were extremely old when I received the bag. This caused for a very bitter and acidic taste upon brew.
Colectivo Coffee is always a safe bet, served at my local diner. I prefer the Toro for and even earthier taste but the Dark Sumatra is a solid dark and well worth it.
It tasted burnt - super dark
I LOVED this coffee! I am a BIG fan! The darker, the better, as far as I am concerned!
Greasy beans and not tasty at all
Kind of greasy when ground and too strong.
I don't like dark roasts, this almost felt over roasted. Very chalky - couldn't brew it beyond first time.
This one isn’t my favorite. Roast seems burnt and overly dominates the taste. Difficult for me to pick up on any flavor notes beyond burnt.
Basic, nothing special
Little syrupy, nice flavor
Pretty decent a little bitter for me. but a good cup nevertheless
Too much smoke, it'll put hair on your chest
Love it! Getting some keylime up front followed by licorice and long dark chocolate finish
Terrible. Over roasted, oily and burnt, not smoky. Bad batch?
Terrible. Over roasted, oily and burnt, not smoky. Bad batch?
This is more like it. Not sure what happened with the first batch but had to unload that as it was just bad. Thanks for this fine choice and please keep the rest somewhat similar.
Was adventurous when I picked but realized I'm not a fan of the earthy / licorice flavor. Thankful this service allows experimenting with different kinds of coffee though.
Loved this dark roast! Deep rich taste.
Earthy notes were a bit bitter
Too dark or acidic.
Again, good coffee, but I'm starting to get the feeling I'm not a big fan of earthy. The Dark Sumatra Ratu Ketiara Gayo still my favorite.
Didn't love this one. It also is "sticky" and gets on everything.
good dark coffee
All I could taste was the roast and very little underlying character of the coffee.
I have enjoyed this coffee so far. Bold, dark, more earthy, caramel flavor. I like better than the fruity citrus flavored coffees.
One of the best dark roast coffees I have ever brewed. The beans smell so very fresh!
Way too dark. Tastes burnt. Clogged up my grinder. Tastes like a Starbucks coffee. Not good
Terrible, beans are very oily and very reminiscent of Starbucks coffee. Please don’t send these kind of coffee beans going foward. Thank you
Sumatra is my favorite. Ioved both Sumatra roasts. Do not want French roast.
Not my favorite. A lot more smokey than i would have guessed. I really enjoyed GOOD FOLKS Deep space blend, but this one is way too smokey. Feels like I'm drinking charcoal.
Tasted really bad. The beans were shiny like most commercially roasted beans, would recommend removing from lineup.
Too dark of a roast for my taste. Way too smokey.
I love the variety and 99% of the coffees that are shipped to me every week, but this dark sumatra did not appeal to me at all. I’m not sure how to pinpoint it since I really enjoy dark roasts - perhaps the smokiness was off offputting. Colectivo Blue Heeler was also disappointing and had a similar profile.
This one was too dark for our liking!
Probably too dark a roast for my taste. It almost tastes burnt and it is hard to get past this and pick out the more subtle flavors.
The coffee seems like it’s cheap coffee. This is 12oz when I believe the rest have been 8oz. The beans are shiny. It doesn’t smell great and it taste awful! I’d like a replacement for this one. I have never requested that before.
Definitely tasted the smoky flavor, but not others on the profile. Was very smooth and easy to drink without cream and sugar. It was good, drinkable coffee, but I expected to be more impressed. I'm wondering if I didn't brew it strong enough. What is the preferred cup to tablespoon ratio for idea coffee in a drip coffee maker?
Used to drink a lot of darker roasts but have been drinking lighter roasts for awhile now. Thought we’d try a darker roast again to change it up a bit - maybe it was just us but this coffee was almost undrinkable. Not at all a fan.
This was totally undrinkable. I made the first pot for my extended family, and people literally spit it out. It was without a doubt the worst coffee any of us has ever tried to drink.
I had to throw away 90-95% of this package. It was absolutely drowning in oil, and was burnt to a crisp. It tasted like greasy charcoal, at best.
I'd like it if this package doesn't count against my total, in view of that it was a total waste that had to be discarded. Please let me know if there is anything you can do.
I absolutely love this dark roast. There are good notes that I can pick up easily, such as the smokiness mentioned in the notes. At the same time, there are other flavors that I am just learning to pick up and am working on, such as the licorice and molasses. More coffees like this one would be perfect, being a style I like (dark) and providing more depth as I learn more about flavor profiles.
More of a burnt taste. Had to experiment with bean quantity to get a good tasting brew.
Way too dark for my taste, the beans are a shiny black. It comes across very earthy and bitter
I had high expectations for this coffee, and it followed through!
Very full bodied,smoky-just what we were looking for!
This is a very dark, "jet-fuel" roast. I found it difficult to make out the different flavors. Would not drink again.
