This coffee will be fresh roasted for you. We expect Quills Coffee will roast and ship this coffee in 1-2 business days depending on their roasting schedule.
This is the Brazil Serra Negra brought to you by Quills Coffee. This pulped natural coffee was grown by the various small holder producers in the South Minas, Cerrado, and Matas de Minas regions of Brazil between 1,200 - 2,000 meters above sea level. The cup is rich and full bodied with notes of roasted nuts and chocolate.
It was good but I would have liked some more complexity
Best coffee I've had all year. This is my jam!
I've always had a bad impression of coffees from Brazil, and this one doesn't help with that impression. It seems no matter what I do I can't extract much flavor. Maybe it's the freshness of the roast, maybe its the character of the beans, or of course, maybe it's just user error. I'm glad there's another Brazilian coffee coming next for comparison.
Yum I love this one. I think my favorite so far.
Very enjoyable, little more acidic
Although very good, it wasn't quite as rich as my previous roasts. It was very smooth though and very approachable. Brewed in a Moccamaster - ground with a Encore (setting 18)
very bitter. :(
The best so far
Good as cold brew, a little too dark for my taste
Too acidic for my taste and one dimensional In terms of flavor.
This bean didn’t have many fruity notes, which I normally prefer. It made pretty good coffee but just not my preference.
This was a really bad coffee worst one yet from mistobox
A little too robust for my taste. I used to like that dark chocolate taste but now it reminds me too much of diner coffee-- which is exactly what I'd classify this as-- a top-shelf diner coffee.
Not a huge fan of the darkness/bitterness of the roast.
Didn’t like it
Flavor notes too generic.
Inoffensive flavor profile, maybe slightly weak. But good caffeine levels give a decent morning high.
OK coffee but nothing special. Definitely like fruitier and less nut and chocolate flavors.
Probably my favorite so far.
Was not getting as much flavor as I would have hoped. Flavor notes were flat for both french press and pour over.
Like this. After sampling a few, we *think* we lean more toward fruity and away from chocolaty.
Objectively this is a good coffee. Full flavor, earthy and nutty as described. Done as pour over. Biased view is not a good coffee for me, I prefer juicy, fruity, and floral
don't like the smell!
Please take my rating with a grain of salt. I'm a light roast fan but am remaining open to different types of coffee. It's not that this coffee tastes bad, it just doesn't have the flavor notes of light roasts that tailor to my taste buds.
Having never heard of Quills prior, I was excited to receive a new roaster this round. Having primarily purchased or received fruity and acidic coffees over the past year, I always like a switch up and this coffee delivered. This is a candy bar in a cup. The nutty and chocolate notes which I’ve come to expect from Brazilian coffees was excellent. This coffee was definitely more full-bodied than others I have had recently, leaving really solid flavor notes on the tongue after drinking. Honestly one of the best coffees I’ve ever had.
Back on track. Please stop sending light/medium bodied coffees.
Not my favorite - it was a good, well-rounded coffee, but I was expecting it to be a little lighter/fruitier because it's a natural.
better this time around
Great texture but the flavors are super distinct.
This coffee just didn’t have the same flavor as the previous ones. It seemed more bitter. It is still good coffee, just not the flavor characteristics we typically enjoy.
This was alright.
Not sure I like chocolate notes. Probably need to tend more toward fruity though I struck out last time.
Not bad. A little too nutty for me. I liked it better french pressed than in an aeropress
It’s not bad coffee, but it’s not coffee I prefer. Since receiving this coffee, I’ve had a total of 3 cups, each brewed differently. I taste the nuttiness of the coffee. It is definitely full bodied. For breakfast I had it paired with a simple miso ramen, the saltiness of the ramen cut out most of the acidity I didn’t enjoy in the cup.
UPDATE: I have turned this coffee into a cold brew, using 80g of coffee to about 32 oz of water, and it is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! I guess the notes just taste sweeter this way. Should try with other coffees.
sweet coffee. amazing flavors and body
Not my favorite, a little too nutty I think
Very bitter, is probably better used for espresso rather than pour overs which is typically my preferred method of brewing.
Slightly less fragrant than I prefer, but it's a pleasant calm coffee.
enjoyed this full bodied coffee which i usually don't. get choice.
Meh. Light on flavor, light on body. No distinctive profile. Some soft nutty notes but not a coffee I would choose to buy. Certainly not "full bodied" as they say.
Generally speaking, I like naturals. This one isn't a fruit bomb like some others, but it's definitely good. Subtle. Chocolate as a note is right on.
We really liked this one!
Not very fruity and very little tasting notes besides roasted flavor.
Bitter and dark - didn't like the flavor
Not my favorite, but it'll do in a pinch. Darker than we usually like.
Great flavor profile!
Adequate coffee, but not as top tier as coffees from Grumpys, Inteligentsia, 49th Parrallel, etc. Flavours are a nice but muted. Wouldn't call it full-bodied, more of a medium, which isn't a bad thing. Would drink again, not a bad daily for the price.
It's very thin flavor-wise! I have been coarsely grinding in my burr grinder and while I like it I am amazed at how light it is. It's refreshing but almost like I'm not drinking coffee.
Not bad but won’t order again
Rich and smooth
Wow this is really good coffee.
Overall this was an OK coffee. VERY nutty, almost barley-like. I homebrew beer as well, and this coffee reminded me of unboiled wort (especially the smell!) without the sweetness.
I could get down on this very occasionally, but would not drink it on the regular.
Stale, bland taste. Not as fresh as expected it to be..
Very bitter finish
Tastes just as advertised. I think this is my first ever Brazilian. Wasn't too complex for my taste - just simple, and yet still very good!
Weak no real flavors come through
Neither Robin nor I were very into this one.
This coffee is terrible, from the aroma to the taste..
I initially liked this coffee okay, but I got tired of it as I worked through the bag. The flavors weren't very distinctive and often felt a bit muddy. I wish I had liked it more -- I am partial to fruitier coffees, and I was hoping that this would expand my range. No luck yet.
Very basic . Nothing special
This got better over time. I only wish it had been fuller-bodied.
A little acidic, Im not getting much of the chocolate.
I enjoyed the nuttiness, but I wasn't able to make it really shine in any distinctive way.
Balanced and boring. I couldn't discern notes of anything. Too plain for my taste. Brewed as pourover and french press.
Enjoyed the body, smooth. The combination of chocolate and nuts were candy like. More nutty then chocolate.
Very well balanced. Really like this one.
Very smooth. Lacking a full body or robust flavors
Daniel and Gwen
Was just ok. Was missing a wow factor. I like the notes of Brazil coffees but I want them to be really exaggerated. This one was well balanced and still good to drink.
GOOD STUFF. Nice, traditional, delicious coffee
Pretty good cup; a bit inconsistent, but a good everyday cup. Not too interesting.
Slight citrus note
I have typically bought more fruity coffees because I was told they were best. This nutty, full-bodied roast is off the charts. Give me more high-quality beans like this, please!
It was ok. I prefer African coffee
An excellent medium-light roasted coffee that was amazingly versatile in brew method. The nutty notes came through with every method and the chocolate notes were especially present via pour over. This was one of the best craft coffees I have had in quite some time.
Nice and smooth blend of flavours. Could perhaps be a little punchier for my tastes.
Our second favorite!
I enjoyed the first shipment better than this Brazil Serra Negra. It was ok but not great. I enjoy the east African single origins the most I think.
It was great for cold brew
Nothing to complain about here. Just an average cup of coffee. Got the job done but did not blow me away.
Decent quality, but not flavorful enough for my taste. A little bland.
Not as enjoyable, flavorful, or memorable as the others we've tried. It seemed more bitter to me.
Just a little bland for us. Doesn't taste "fresh".
Not my favorite, just okay flavor for my taste.
Flavors came through very well in my espresso. Great beans
Had a burnt taste. The full bodied notes of nuts and chocolate seemed over-roasted.
Absolutely the best cup of coffee I've ever had. I LOVED this one.
Definitely one of the best coffees we've gotten from Mistobox.
OK, but not our favorite. A little bolder then we prefer and notes of nuts and chocolate are not as prominent as expected.
It was a nice cup, but nothing too special. Definitely wasn't a summer cup, no particular flavors really shown through.
More nut focused and nut based; not as much of a fan of the strong nut based coffees.
A terrible coffee. Totally unbalanced. Bland.
Please do not send Brazil coffees.
Dig this one!
favorites so far, light but sweet
This was a solid coffee to have in the evening off a ceramic drip or a Brikka.
Didn't like it very much.
Aromatic and nutty strong as well. I like it, used with drip coffee and works well with it.
Full bodied and balanced.
Smooth, rather bland
We used the French Press the first few times making this coffee and it was meh. I recently purchased the Hario v60 and Fellow Stagg to begin my journey into pour over coffee at home. I can say the pour over method produced a MUCH BETTER cup! I loved how smooth this coffee was and the nutty undertones.
Solid after-dinner party cup. Full-bodied, centered palate in french press.
One of my favorites! So good.
good, not great
Love the toasty notes
Literally about to be my fourth bag of Brazilian.... you should invest in other origins of coffee. There so many incredible origins and roasts of coffee from all over. Brazilian is great for that cliche coffee flavor, but that's it...
This coffee was ALRIGHT. There was nothing distinctly wrong with it. It was just so ridiculously mellow that there was no defining characteristics other than maybe a milk chocolate taste.
This is a flavorful, smooth coffee with very low acid. Our favorite selection so far.
Favorite so far
Definitely full bodied but often came off more bitter than desirable.
Simple and rich
Sorry I haven't been rating these coffees lately, I keep forgetting to do it! Lately the darker roasted coffee that I have been getting has been great, and the exposure has been helping me develop a palate for the chocolaty flavors like I was asking in my last review.
Unfortunately I was sick pretty much all last week, and I haven't even finished the Quills coffee, let alone the newest shipment I got haha. I will rate the newest shipment when I get to it though.
I do have another coffee question: should there always be some bitter notes in each cup of coffee that is brewed? I've noticed that I like grinding my beans finer so get some bitter notes for these darker roasts. Would light roasts benefit from having some bitter flavors? Or would I grind those beans coarser to minimize the bitterness and maximize the sweeter flavors?
This coffee was very dark and roasty. This should not have been sent as it does not fit my profile at all.
The full bodied Flavor is really strong with this one. Not our personal favorite, but if you like a darker more traditional tasting cup, this coffee is for you.
Really liked this one! The description is pretty much spot on, so not a whole lot to add. A relatively light coffee really, but not without real richness and character. A moderate, pleasant acidity and a very definite nutiness with against a solid base of chocolate. Good stuff!
It's smells and taste good. Similar to the previous coffees.
this held us up during Irma, good stuff, even after being ground and stored since we had no power for a couple of days.
Rear from first sip on
Coffee smelled great, but in tasting fell off the tongue quickly. Very nutty.
Probably my favorite one so far. Great rich flavor, full bodied, and perfectly roasted. The slight bitterness at the end compliments the chocolate and nutty notes very well.
At first, I wasn't a big fan. After about a week it really grew on me. Very rich and full, and the chocolate really came out in each cup.
Seriously excellent cup of coffee. Roasted to perfection, can really taste the quality of the coffee. A perfect balance of flavor.
I really like this one! A bit less acidic which was nice but not too strong
Great flavor, makes a good tasting cold brew (a la A.B.).
I really liked this. It was indeed very full bodied and rich.
I liked this one! Better after brewing at a lower ratio. I could do with less nuttiness.
WOW. Absolutely love everything about this coffee!!!
Extraordinarily smooth, rich flavor. There's a woodsy tone underneath the chocolate main impression. And a little spiciness in the aftertaste that was a nice surprise.
Good, smooth, rich finish AND local for me. Haha!
My least favorite so far
This is the chocolatiest coffee I have ever had. I enjoy it very much. The roasted nuts flavors come out a bit more as the coffee cools, but it is certainly one of my new favorites.
This coffee really didn't have a lot of flavor. I experimented with several grind sizes and couldn't get past the plainness of it. The packing, however, was beautiful, and that's always a pleasant addition in my opinion!
Brazil of Brazils!
A little on the bitter side, and unbalanced, with to much acid.
I like this even more than the last one. The chocolate flavor is great, with just a hint of acidity without getting too sour.
Tastier at lower ratios and does really well with some milk/cream. Tasting notes were spot on: straight milk chocolate with some fruit notes.
I really enjoyed this coffee! Easy drinking yet complex at the same time.
Nutty taste at the start and an interesting smooth appealing finish.
The bag was gone quickly.
